14 Inch Sheller Maintenance

Instructions and Helpful Tips to Operate a 14" Automatic Pecan Sheller:

The Modern Electronics and Equipment 14" Pecan Sheller is a time proven durable design! It is easy to operate and simple to maintain.

General Instructions:

Begin by pouring cracked pecans into the Pecan Sheller Hopper. Use the appropriate wrench to modify the sheller ring space to the desired width. Once the sheller ring space is set, close all guards and turn on the machine. The pecans will discharge out of the bottom of the sheller. Pecans that are too large to shell will fall out of the Over-Ride Chute. It is located at the motor end of the Pecan Sheller. The Paddle Shaft speed can be adjusted by moving the Motor Mount up or down. This causes the pecans to break up at a faster or slower pace.

Machine Maintenance:

The 14" Pecan Sheller requires relatively low maintenance. There are only six bearings that must be greased every year. Please note that if you have acquired a new 14" Pecan Sheller this maintenance schedule should only be followed after one year (one pecan shelling season). This is because these steps have already been performed at the factory. The parts of the Pecan Sheller that require maintenance are listed below:

• Inner Paddle Shaft Bearing - Located on the Input End
• Outer Paddle Shaft Bearing - Located on the Input End
• Inner Paddle Shaft Bearing - Located on the Output End
• Outer Paddle Shaft Bearing - Located on the Output End
• Outer Drive Shaft Bearing - Located below the Paddle Shaft on the Output End
• Inner Drive Shaft Bearing - Located below the Paddle Shaft on the Output End
• Drive Chain

The diagram with these bearing locations is shown below in Drawing A-1.

The tool(s) required for yearly maintenance is as follows:

• Grease Gun with flexible hose
• Food Grade Grease

To Grease the Bearings on the 14" Pecan Sheller:

• Turn the Pecan Sheller off and disconnect the power leads so as to remove the possibility of accidentally turning the machine on while performing maintenance.
• Remove the Sheller Exterior Covers so there is access to the internals of the Pecan Sheller
• Move to the input end of the Pecan Sheller, and reach into the Pecan Hopper with the grease gun in hand and grease the Outer Paddle Shaft Bearing by pumping two shots of food grade grease into the grease fitting. See Drawing A-1 for the location of the Outer Paddle Shaft Bearing.
• Move to the Discharge End (opposite of the input end) and pump two shots of food grade grease into the Outer Paddle Shaft Bearing. See Drawing A-1 for location of bearing.
• While standing at the discharge end, rotate (by hand) the Sheller Rings until the grease fitting on the Inner Paddle Shaft Bearing is accessible by the grease gun. Pump two shots of food grade grease into this bearing. See Drawing A-1 for the location of bearing.
• Move back to the Input End of the Pecan Sheller. Reach with your hand into the Pecan Hopper and through the Pecan Inlet. When your fingers go just past the Pecan Inlet, reach upwards with them to feel for the grease fitting on the Inner Paddle Shaft Bearing. If there is no access to the grease fitting, carefully rotate the Sheller Ring Assembly (by hand) until the grease fitting is within reach. When the grease fitting is within reach, lead the grease gun flexible hose through the Pecan Inlet and onto the grease fitting and pump two shots of food grade grease into the bearing. See Drawing A-1 for the location of the bearing.
• Move back to the discharge end and lie down underneath the Pecan Sheller. Locate the Drive Shaft Bearings and pump two shots of food grade grease into each one. See Drawings A-1 for the location of the Drive Shaft Bearing.

Safety Guidelines:

The Modern Electronics Pecan Sheller product line comes equipped with Protective Guards. DO NOT OPERATE THIS MACHINE WITHOUT PROTECTIVE GUARDS IN PLACE. Stop the Pecan Sheller before performing maintenance and before performing any other activities that will require removal of Protective Guards. Stop the machine before reaching into the Sheller with body parts (i.e. hands, fingers, etc.) or tools. Failure to follow these guidelines can result in severe injury or even death. Unless otherwise specified, before operating this machine, alert employees of safety guidelines. As always, common sense and direct and clear instruction will keep everyone safe.

To Adjust the 14" Pecan Sheller for Pecan Size:

Turn off the machine and disconnect it from it's power supply. Turn Adjustment Nut clockwise to close rings or turn the Adjustment Nut counter-clockwise to open the rings.

To Adjust the 14" Pecan Sheller Speed:

Loosen the T-Handle and lift the Motor Mount up for faster speeds and lower the Motor Mount for slower speeds. This step may be performed while the machine is running as long as the proper protective guards are in place and care is taken not to obstruct the moving parts of the sheller with body parts (i.e. hands, fingers, etc.) or tools.
